!0-foot ceilings are definitely the way to go. I've been in 9-foot ceiling houses and they do not give the same graciousness as 10 feet. As Carolyn suggested, you can drop the ceiling to 9 feet in the kitchen, or you can simply add a one-foot soffit around the perimeter of the kitchen to make the ceiling 9 feet for the cabinets. For decades, the standard ceiling height was 8 feet talla dimension that resulted from two 4-foot-wide drywall sheets laid together horizontally. But homes are now being built with standard 9 or 10 foot ceilings on the first floor,
